HPS, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Morocco, launched the first mobile switch platform in Africa, enabling seamless interoperability between banks, payment institutions, Fintechs, PSPs, merchants and FMCGs. Powered by PowerCARDSwitch, this national platform is accelerating Morocco’s transition from a cash-based economy to a digitally inclusive one.
The challenge
In Morocco, where only 44% of adults have access to formal financial services and mobile money usage stands at just 6%, the digital divide is particularly acute in rural areas and among women.
Despite progress, cash remains the dominant payment method, with 79% of small merchants still relying on cash for client transactions, and only 34% aware of mobile payment options.
HPS has played a pivotal role in the design and deployment of a national mobile payment program aimed at addressing these gaps. The initiative seeks to reduce reliance on cash, promote digital payments and accelerate financial inclusion nationwide.
